Ask around.
Everyone knows someone who has gotten carpentry work done recently, and if you don’t, you can find people online who are in your area. You can talk to people from around your region, or even friends, that have gotten work done and see if they have anyone that they suggest. The reason you do this is because, if they were especially good or bad, you’re going to get an honest answer from people. Sometimes you have to take it with a grain of salt, because grumpy customers show up all over the place, but in general, you can trust what you see.
Look for a licensed and bonded Carpentry professional.
To work as a carpenter in most areas, you have to be licensed, so this shouldn’t be an issue. Bonding, or the act of being insured, is important as well, because that means that not only is the work guaranteed, but it the carpenter is also covered if an emergency occurs while he or she is on the job So, if they’re insured, you get the work that you pay for, and if there’s a hospital bill (in the worst cases), you don’t have to pay for it.
Meet with those you are considering for hire.
Always meet with the people you want to hire. In the best cases, you can do it at your home so that they can see the work that you want them to do, and they can give you a fair estimate. Then, you can see what type of person they are, whether or not they think they can do the job that you want them to do, and you can get an idea of what it’s going to cost you to get the job in question finished.
Always sign a contract.
Don’t just let a carpenter come in and start working on your project! You wouldn’t do that with anyone else, why would you do it with a carpenter? Make sure that everything that you discuss is down on paper and signed; that way, you can be sure that everything will be done to your specifications and there is a piece of paper to protect you if something unfortunate happens. It protects you and the carpenter.
