What is a Carpenter?

what is a carpenter

You may have heard of a carpenter, but you may not be sure exactly what they do or the type of work that they perform. If you want to learn more about what a carpenter is and what they do, read on! This article is going to explore carpenters more in depth.

First off, carpenters are actually very versatile people.

They know how to perform a number of different tasks, including reading blueprints, understanding flooring and anything else that they may be working on, the ability to use various tools, and more. A carpenter can help their customers choose the materials that they want to use in the colors that they want to use as well.

They don’t only take care of flooring either; there are actually a number of different types of carpenters that you may come across, and knowing the difference between them can help you to get the job done correctly the first time.

Here are some of the most common types of carpenters.

  • Joisters. These are a particular type of carpenter that does everything related to the pre-construction of the floor. When you’re building a home, there’s a small area underneath the frames that hold up your door that have these devices called joists. These joists are what hold up the floor and what the floor will attach to when it’s installed.
  • Furniture carpenters or “joiners”. This used to be the traditional “carpenter” that you would see in towns. These were the people who would build wooden furniture, cabinets, models, and everything else related to wood furniture and furnishings. Basically, they would be the one who put those together and installed them in your home.
  • Rough Carpenter. As you would expect, this is the professional who does the “rough” part of the carpentry jobs. Many rough carpenters will work for contractors and they will take care of the wood that holds up the frame or form of your home. They’re the ones that are responsible for the structure of your home.
  • Floor Carpenter. This is, as you would expect, the person who comes in and installs the flooring, whether it’s wood, lineoleum, or carpet. Sometimes, that’s all they do, but other times, they’ll do some of the other tasks that other carpenters do (as listed above) as well.
  • Roofer. Many people don’t realize that roofers are actually included under the umbrella of carpentry, but they are. Roofing is a type of carpentry in and of itself, because it has to deal with the structure of your home. Roofers are perhaps the most unique type of carpenter, because they need specialized skills that no other carpenters may have.
