What is a Commercial Carpentry Professional?

what is a commercial carpentry professional

If you own a business, then you may, one day, be in need of a commercial carpentry professional’s services. Commercial carpenters are actually a lot different than standard carpentry professionals, because they have a lot of skills that they need to know in order to do their job correctly.

Commercial carpenters actually take a number of specialized courses in order to be certified to do what they do. Because they are working with buildings that are larger than traditional homes and they usually have to work with different materials than what they may encounter in a home. Commercial carpenters will do work on schools, churches, even bridges and tunnels.

What are commercial carpenters trained in?

Here are a few of the many things that commercial carpenters are trained to do:

  • They know how to use almost any power tool on the market, even the ones that you don’t see very often. Some of these tools are more complex than their residential carpentry counterparts (different types of drills, jackhammers, etc).
  • Since they are working with larger structures, the safety requirements are a lot more complex and complicated than those that you follow when working on a residential building.
  • Carpenters have to understand how to use more heavy-duty carpentry materials. They aren’t just working with wood anymore; they are playing with heavy duty steel and concrete, which are materials that you rarely see in modern homes.
  • Even though residential carpenters usually know how to weld, commercial carpentry requires a carpenter to use it much more often. Welding is a very precise process, so if you aren’t trained correctly, you’ll have problems.
  • The roofs that you work on are much different than the ones you will see on a home. They sometimes look the same (they’ll have shingles or whatever else you see on residential homes), but sometimes they’re big slabs of concrete. Think about how the roofs of schools and warehouses look – commercial carpenters have to work with those all of the time, and understand how they’re structured.
  • Many times, commercial carpenters have to read more complicated and complex blueprints than you see for homes. There are usually multiple floors, the areas they’re working with are much larger, and they’re a little harder to understand because of all of the requirements.
  • Stairs are also a lot different. There are requirements that municipalities have for commercial buildings that commercial carpentry professionals have to know exactly how to meet.
  • Commercial carpenters also have to know how to work around devices like elevators and escalators, in case they come across them while working on a larger building. They have to know how to position flooring and do other tasks around them.

So, when you’re looking to have work done on your business or another type of commercial building, you will want to find a commercial carpentry expert that can take care of your job in a way that is efficient, both in terms of time and cost.
